The Sheriff (Keith Allen) puts Operation Shah Mat (translation: Kill the King) into action. He assembles a garrison of hundreds of men, the dread Black Knights. He commissions the development of indestructible armor that will turn his army into Iron Men. To fund his plans, he plots to cheat a high-rolling Bavarian aristocrat, while Robin (Jonas Armstrong) and company try to pull an Ocean’s 11 and rob his impenetrable Strong Room. But big picture: The Sheriff is determined to intercept King Richard upon his return to England and kill him. Robin receives the clandestine help of Marian (Lucy Griffiths), who, with her ailing father, is being held under house arrest in the castle. After the mostly rollicking romp that was Series One, Series Two of this royally entertaining BBC series takes a decidedly darker, Empire Strikes Back turn (let's just hope that next time around, Robin and his men don't find Ewoks in Sherwood Forrest). Along with the daring rescues, swashbuckling fights, and anachronistic dialogue ("Get with the program, Gisborne") that are this series' stock in trade, Robin’s tireless campaign against the Sheriff gets very personal. In the first episode, the Sheriff's snake-fancying sister is killed while trying to administer "death by fanging" to Robin, and Gisborne (Richard Armitage), still smarting from being jilted at the author, burns Marian's home to the ground. Later, Robin discovers that one of his men, not so merry, is a Gisborne spy. And there is a shocking death in the finale that will rock the series to its core. Despite several cheeky episode titles ("Booby and the Beast," "Show Me the Money"), Series Two mostly keeps a straight face. Purists may blanche at the liberties taken with this centuries-old legend, (Marian, moonlighting as the vigilante Nightwatchman, demonstrates some wicked martial arts moves). But for anyone who, like the kids in the exciting episode, "Child Hood," spent childhood afternoons dashing about the forest pretending to be the outlaw folk hero, then the Sheriff's departing words in the season finale will make you quiver with anticipation: "This isn't over, Hood." --Donald Liebenson

Third Watch: The Complete Second Season continues the critically acclaimed television drama's unique approach to character-driven storylines within a fluid if somewhat familiar milieu. Almost anticipating the now-legendary heroism of New York City's police and rescue workers on September 11, 2001, these early episodes of Third Watch (the series began in 1999) concern the daily partnership and shared risks between New York cops, firefighters, and paramedics as they attempt to keep people alive in the midst of random chaos. While television shows about public servants are nothing new, what makes Third Watch both different and engrossing is the way creators John Wells (ER) and Edward Allen Bernero (Criminal Minds) hone in on one or two characters in each episode, relegating the rest of the cast to minor supporting roles. Thus, an individual who stands out in one episode for his or her efforts to do the job well--despite real-world pressures, lapses in judgment, and moral uncertainty--might appear only briefly, and perhaps less sympathetically, in another episode as seen from a different character's perspective.

That kind of revolving focus not only keeps Third Watch constantly fresh, it embraces master filmmaker Jean Renoir's famous observation (paraphrased here) that each of us has a reason for being who we are and doing what we do. Beyond its success at turning such an expansive spirit into appealing drama, Third Watch is also noteworthy for superb writing (much of it by Wells), harrowing set pieces, production values that stress an original, signature look, and a strong emphasis on relationships between on-the-job partners. The cast remains superb, particularly Jason Wiles as an immature, cynical, yet oddly effective young cop, Molly Price as his beleaguered but dedicated partner, and Skipp Sudduth as a veteran police officer whose leadership on the streets belies his rudderless off-duty existence. Among some truly memorable episodes in The Complete Second Season are "Four Days," in which one of the program's most stable characters, African-American paramedic "Doc" Parker (Michael Beach), slowly comes unglued by his growing perception of institutional racism, and season finale "…and Zeus Wept," a nightmarish thriller about a school shooting. --Tom Keogh

Nothing seems to divide a TV show's fan base more than its final season, and in the case of the fearless sketch comedy series In Living Color, there's no exception. Some feel that despite the departure of series creator Keenan Ivory Wayans, siblings/co-stars Damon, Kim, and Shawn, and standout castmate Kelly Coffield (as well as "Fly Girl" Jennifer Lopez) in the fourth season, the show still had some of its old fire, and that's evident from several of the sketches collected in this box, including several "Dirty Dozens" sketches, "The B.S. Brothers Talk Show," and "East Hollywood Squares" (with Hollywood Squares host Peter Marshall once again as host) The other side of the debate contends that the show had either suffered from too much intervention from the Fox Network (which had taken a more hands-on approach to the show shortly before the Wayans jumped ship), or had simply run out of gas by its 1993-94 season, and its once-fresh characters and concepts had turned from cutting-edge to offensive for offensive's sake. And that's evident on this set as well: Jim Carrey's Fire Marshall Bill seems more forced than ever, and spoofs of Ike Turner, Barney, and other pop culture piñatas seem like easy targets that would've been overlooked in earlier seasons. Still, there are laughs to be found in season 5, and when it works, the comedy contained here is brighter and more outrageous than most of what passes for sketch comedy on television today. No extras are included in the three double-sided-disc set, though a wealth of comedy and musical guest stars, including Chris Rock, Johnny Gill, Shaquille O'Neal, US3, and others add some sparkle to the episodes. --Paul Gaita

One of the most curious animated series to come from the Adult Swim stable, Frisky Dingo might be best described as a cartoon superhero take on Seinfeld's formula: a show that's about nothing, but one that's also funny and fascinating all the same. The brainchild of Sealab 2021 creators Matt Thompson and Adam Reed, the premise of Frisky Dingo concerns millionaire playboy Xander Crews, who moonlights as costumed crime fighter Awesome-X. Having vanquished his last archvillain, Crews is urged by his employees to return to his office to sort out the financial mess created by his alter ego. But the arrival of the monstrous Killface and his Annihilatrix (which will pull the launch the Earth into the sun) lures him back into… well, not so much action as lots and lots of paperwork. The resulting episodes of Season 1 concern Crews and Killface's attempts to fund their respective projects while dealing with distractions like Simon, Killface's incorrigible son, and Crews' exasperated second in command Stan. To say that Frisky Dingo is unlike any other superhero series on television (and very few animated series in general) is a distinct understatement, but there's a method behind the madness: that the vagaries of life often get in the way of the loftiest of goals. Of course, that doesn't explain the show's endless non sequiters and moments of true surrealism, like Awesome-X's clueless henchmen, the X-tacles, or episodes like "Emergency Room," in which the entire cast of characters spends the full running time suffering from various horrible injuries. Maybe it's best to think of this as meta-superhero action. All 13 episodes of Frisky Dingo's debut season are compiled on this single disc (each episode runs just 11 minutes), but sadly, no supplemental features are included. That's unfortunate, if for no other reason than they might have provided some sort of explanation for the show's motives. -- Paul Gaita

Arguably the biggest hit of the 2010 television season, the apocalypse drama The Walking Dead pulls the zombie subgenre out of its overexposed doldrums and finds, ironically enough, the humanity and emotion beneath its rotting shell. Produced by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and Gale Anne Hurd (Aliens) and based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead follows a band of Atlanta-based survivors of a viral outbreak that has caused the dead to rise up and consume the living. The group's nominal leader is a sheriff's deputy (Andrew Lincoln) who wakes from a gunshot-induced coma to find the world in disarray and his wife (Sarah Wayne Callies, Prison Break) and son missing. His search for his family and the survivors' attempts to make sense of their lives in the wake of the outbreak is handled with intelligence and sensitivity, which helps to elevate the show beyond the grindhouse take on zombies, which favors spilled guts over character development. That's not to say that the blood doesn't flow plentifully here: the special effects are on par with zombie-movie mayhem, but again, they aren't the show's raison d'être. Solid performances, including Jon Bernthal as Lincoln's partner, Jeffrey DeMunn as the group's leading rationalist, and Michael Rooker and Norman Reedus as a pair of trouble-making rednecks, and gripping suspense make each of the first season's six episodes compelling from start to finish for both horror fans and those who dislike the genre as a whole.

The two-disc set of Walking Dead's first season includes all six episodes, as well as a number of making-of extras, including the show's conception and production, a talk with Robert Kirkman (he's a fan), a look at the makeup by KNB Studios, and the show's panel at the 2010 ComicCon. All of the principal players on both sides of the camera are given adequate screen time to discuss their vision for the show, its influences (George Romero, naturally), and the challenges of depicting the end of civilization on a budget. --Paul Gaita

Not only did Freema Agyeman (as Earth doctor Martha Jones) prove to be more than a worthwhile replacement for Rose, but the quality of the series' 14 episodes maintained--and in many cases surpassed--the blend of wit, excitement and drama brought by head writer Russell T. Jones when he revived the program in 2003. The fifth season marks several firsts for the Full House gang. In the pilot ("Double Trouble"), Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) starts kindergarten, D.J. (Candace Cameron) enters high school, and Jesse (John Stamos) and Becky (Lori Loughlin) find out they're having twins. The Waltons' nearly 10-year run on network television grew out of the popular, 1971 made-for-TV movie The Homecoming, which was derived from a Depression-era, rustic setting ("Walton's Mountain"), and characters based on Earl Hamner Jr.'s autobiographical novel Spencer's Mountain--itself the source for a very nice 1963 feature film starring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara. That's a lot of entertainment sprouting from Hamner's prose. But something about his seminal story of family values, rugged independence, and big dreams amidst a hardscrabble existence captured the hearts of American audiences, many of whom personally recalled severe economic adversity in the 1930s.

The Waltons: The Complete First Season collects those initial episodes from the series building on the strengths of the Homecoming pilot, which introduced the extended Walton clan led by a strong-willed mill owner, John (Andrew Duggan), and his equally resolute wife, Olivia (Patricia Neal). The Waltons recast those key roles (as well as a few others) with Ralph Waite and Michael Learned (yup, a female), but Richard Thomas carried over as oldest child John-Boy Walton, an aspiring writer whose cusp-of-manhood view informs the series. Will Geer (Seconds) replaced Edgar Bergen as Grandpa Walton, Ellen Corby remained as Grandma, and John and Olivia's large brood (seven kids in all) were filled out by largely unknown, young actors. The episodes, still delightful and touching, strong on production values and unusually tight and polished for primetime drama, tended to focus on creator Hamner's pet themes of self-sacrifice and heroic effort when the going got tough.

Year 1 highlights include "The Carnival," in which the impoverished Waltons, who can't pay for tickets to see a circus performance, end up sheltering stranded carney folk. "The Typewriter" is a classic about John-Boy "borrowing" a museum's antique typewriter, only to have his sister Mary Ellen (Judy Norton) sell it as junk. "The Sinner" concerns the arrival of a fundamentalist minister on Walton's Mountain, finding comfort in the words of religious iconoclast John Walton after the clergyman makes a fool of himself with moonshine. That's Hamner himself providing touches of narration. During the long run of the multiple-award-winning The Waltons, there were many changes in casting and storylines. But this boxed set reveals a fine series in its pristine state. --Tom Keogh

A plague of global proportions. Anarchy in the streets. The collapse of government and the rule of law--perhaps even the end of civilization itself!--followed by the rise of tyranny and vigilantism. There's heavy stuff happening in Survivors, a British sci-fi drama offered here with all 12 episodes from its first two (and so far only) seasons on five discs. Although it shares a title, original writer (Terry Nation), and several character names with a mid-'70s series, this is apparently not a remake. But the basic idea, detailed in the 90-minute pilot episode, is the same: Present-day Britain has fallen prey to a particularly nasty influenza virus. Within days, it's clear that the disease won't be easily contained; within a couple of weeks, at least 90 percent of the population has died from it, not merely in England but across the planet. As the world as they know it quickly falls apart--no electricity, no communications, no mass transit, no readily available medical care--and those who survived due to immunity start to sort themselves out, the show narrows its focus on one disparate and distinctly multicultural group: Abby (Julie Graham), the de facto leader, who's determined to find the son she's convinced is still alive; Tom (Max Beesley), who was doing time for robbery and murder when the virus struck; Anya (Zoe Tapper), an attractive young doctor; Greg (Peterson Joseph), a would-be loner whose life had already been falling apart; Al (Phillip Rhys), a rich, lazy ne'er do well; and Najid, a devout, 11-year-old Muslim.

The remaining episodes follow this core bunch as they cope with their strange new world--a world in which, as Tom puts it, "we make our own law now." These are people we come to know and, for the most part, care about--especially Abby (one of the very few who contracted and then somehow recovered from the virus) and Tom (whose violent ways make him both an invaluable protector and the object of much mistrust). Other major and minor characters come and go, including various bands of outlaws, thieves, and such, led by religious zealots, power-hungry criminals, greedy entrepreneur types planning to cash in once things return to normal, and so on; there are a few good guys along the way, too. The bigger picture is addressed as well, as a surviving minister (Nikki Amuka-Bird) attempts to put the government back together (using increasingly drastic and outrageous methods) and a sinister band of scientists conduct Mengele-like experiments in their search for a vaccine. It's not all brilliant--some of the hour-long episodes move very slowly (by and large, season 2 is faster paced and more exciting than the first), and there are some mawkish, overly melodramatic scenes. But the central themes (Are people basically good, or evil? How would we cope in a world without civilization?) and characters are enough to make for very compelling viewing. --Sam Graham

The Venture Bros.: Season 4, Vol. 2 Specifications
The Venture Bros. continues its relentless march towards absurd brilliance with this second volume of its fourth season, which unfolds in a dizzying blend of conspiracy theories, convoluted psycho-dramas, maturity rituals, and at least one musical number. The brothers themselves--hapless Dean and thoughtless Hank--continue to grow up (whether they like it or not), with Dean taking on an internship with Professor Impossible (voiced by Bill Hader) that proves to be more than just a résumé builder, and Hank joining the ranks of manhood in a particularly unpleasant manner while investigating his surly pal Dermott's parentage. Both episodes ("Bright Lights, Dean City" and "Everybody Comes to Hank's") are note-perfect examples of what makes the Venture Bros. such a pleasure: clever (but never self-satisfied) writing with a keen understanding of the show's comic book-pop culture roots and just the right blend of crassness and wit. The season's other highlight is its hour-long conclusion, "Operation P.R.O.M.," which brings the season's entire, labyrinthine story arcs to a finale that is fitting, a bit touching, and completely unhinged. Elsewhere, viewers learn along with Doc Venture (James Urbaniak) about the hideous slang term attached to his name, while Brock Samson (Patrick Warburton), Sergeant Hatred (Christopher McCulloch, a.k.a. series cocreator Jackson Publick), and Henchman 21 (cocreator Doc Hammer) resolve some long-standing emotional conflicts. It's a rare thing for a series to continue to grow and even blossom in its fourth season, but The Venture Bros. does both, in its own very odd but charming ways.

Extras on the two-disc Vol. 2 set are, like its predecessor, slim but entertaining: Publick and Hammer provide amusing commentaries for each of the eight episodes in the set, and there's a smattering of inconsequential deleted scenes. Actor Toby Huss, who voices the deeply deluded General Triester, is featured in a segment that has him providing a number of different readings on a line of dialogue, and the set includes several promotional spots for the show during its original broadcast. Viewers should know that the episodes in Vol. 2 are presented uncut, which means that the ridiculously grotesque definitions for a "Rusty Venture" are unbleeped; it's an unfortunate choice, as the adult language tends to cheapen the show's humor. --Paul Gaita

The critically acclaimed show owed a debt to Buffy the Vampire Slayer for its mix of action, romance, mystery, and moral quandaries, but in this season Alias truly came into its own--with a climax that came as a total shocker and prepped the show for an emotionally volatile third season. Guest stars included the phenomenal Amy Irving as Sloane's wife, Faye Dunaway as a nefarious bigwig, Christian Slater as a kidnapped scientist, and Ethan Hawke as a fellow CIA agent (or rather, two of them), but it was the dysfunctional nuclear family of Syd, Irina, and father Jack (Victor Garber) that gave Alias its heart and its strength, whether the three perfectly cast actors (all Emmy nominated) were just bickering or undertaking deadly hand-to-hand combat. After an uneven first season, the show's skilled writers, producers, and directors have found a tone that smoothly balances moral debate, personal drama, and light comedy. Maybe it's a little too smooth; sometimes the characters' quirks seem overly packaged, their private needs too easily gotten around when the plot demands it. But the show's writers have a gift for swift acceleration. Each episode leaps forward, scenes building on each other until every issue--and every personal complication--has been squeezed for maximum effect. Sally Field continues to bring great depth and nuance to her performance as Nora--a not-so-traditional housewife facing her late husband's betrayals (and the viewer learns of more this season), yet finding that adversity really does make her stronger.

The rest of the stellar ensemble includes Rob Lowe as the uber-ambitious senator husband of Kitty, played by Calista Flockhart, who shows welcome restraint. Sarah (Rachel Griffiths) contends with her new single life by plunging into a new startup venture--and finding she's pretty darn good at it. The three Walker brothers include Kevin (Matthew Rhys), Tommy (Balthazar Getty) and recovered junkie vet Justin (Dave Annable), the last of whom is delighted to discover that the comely Rebecca (Emily VanCamp) is not actually a blood relative. Much of season 3's sexiness comes from this new, hot couple. And there's drama with Tommy, too--which will change the Walkers' lives forever. The six-disc set is what such sets should be: a bounty of great extras that the committed Brothers and Sisters fan will not want to miss. These include deleted scenes, silly bloopers, and wonderful interviews with Field and Wettig, as well as a mini-doc on a real-life food and wine company based in Ojai, Calif. Michael Scott's long tenure as manager of Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch comes to a bittersweet end in the seventh season of The Office, leaving viewers to wonder how and if the show will survive without star Steve Carell. The actor's departure marks a turning point for the comedy that extends beyond finding a replacement for its lead. The Office itself had begun to show cracks in its façade in its fifth season, with too frequent dips into implausible story lines and character behavior that hewed more cartoonish than the careful mix of sitcom humor and human observation with which the show made its mark. How The Office resets itself in Carell's wake will remain the task of its eighth season, but season seven offers an agreeable place-marker for the cast and crew, who pay tribute to Scott with several genuinely funny episodes and a wrap-up that manages to be heartfelt without tipping into overly sentimental territory. The season also features a recurring turn by Will Ferrell as Deangelo Vickers, Michael's temporary replacement and a walking collection of frayed nerves and personality tics. Ferrell is amusing in his four-episode story arc, but at times, his livewire routine clashes mightily with the lower-keyed energy of the established cast. More effective is the parade of celebrities who queue up to replace Michael in the season's conclusion, "Search Committee," with James Spader (a new Office cast member as of season eight), Ray Romano, Jim Carrey, Will Arnett, and UK Office creator Ricky Gervais (as David Brent) adjusting their respective styles to the level of the series. Other highlights include the unveiling of Michael's long-gestating film project Threat Level Midnight, which features an array of past Office performers, and "Viewing Party," which evokes past after-hours get-togethers in its barrage of neuroses run wild.

Extras on the four-disc Blu-ray set include four episodes with commentary tracks, each featured on a single disc; Carell is again noticeably absent from these tracks, but series creator Greg Daniels and various cast and crew members, including B.J. Novak, Ellie Kemper, and Paul Lieberstein, do their best be informative and entertaining. Deleted scenes from most of the episodes provide more footage of Ferrell and the other guest stars, while extended versions of "Training Day" and "Search Committee" provide some subtle moments of character development. The complete Threat Level Midnight is a welcome addition, as is The 3rd Floor, a series of webisodes about the staff shooting a horror movie in the office after hours. A fairly hilarious blooper reel rounds out the set. --Paul Gaita

There's plenty of both to go around. Little Jamie (Jackson Brundage) becomes close to a Ravens basketball star, Quentin (Robbie Jones), only to experience heartbreak. Dan, Lucas' and Nathan's father--whom we last saw struck by a car--finds himself in a Misery-like nightmare, kept captive by a crazy lady who tortures him and forces him to eat live insects. (Yes, well, perhaps this bit of the season's storyline is ridiculously over-the-top.) Only Haley, Nathan's wife and Jamie's mom, demonstrates her typical equanimity in the face of everyone else's crises. And the crises keep on coming. A significant death devastates everyone. Nathan gets word from his doctor that basketball could cripple him for life. Peyton's health is on the line after becoming pregnant. Brooke is physically assaulted in her own shop. Lucas can't decide who should direct the film version of his autobiographical first novel. Dan awaits word that an available heart can replace his own, failing one. Calling Top Gear "a car show" is like describing the Titanic as "a big boat" or Dom Perignon as "sparkling wine"--not inaccurate, just inadequate. Oh, motorheads (especially those fixated on fantastically fast, expensive autos) will surely get their fix from the ten episodes (on three discs) collected here from the British program’s tenth season. But Top Gear’s reach is much broader than that; more than merely informative, it’s funny, thrilling, smart, and just plain entertaining enough to appeal to viewers of all persuasions. That’s due to a variety of factors. The three hosts (or "presenters," as the Brits call them), James May, Richard Hammond, and Jeremy Clarkson, are knowledgeable and witty--especially Clarkson, who, although a bit of a snob, has a gift for droll turns of phrase (driving the Audi R8 "supercar," he says, "is like smearing honey into Keira Knightley," while the more humble Honda Civic is "eager, urgent… like a penshioner’s terrier"). From a technical standpoint, it’s excellent; the camera work and production values are first-rate, and the show is filled with beautiful shots and judiciously chosen effects work. Most important, the actual content is compulsively watchable. A typical 50-minute episode will include a hands-on review of an automobile, be it some fabulous rich man’s toy (an Aston-Martin roadster, say, or a self-parking Lexus) or an oddity like the minuscule Peel P50, which is all of 54 inches long and 40 inches wide. Most episodes also include a segment entitled "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car," in which a celebrity drives a lap around a racetrack in some ordinary sedan (this season’s guests include actress Helen Mirren, Rolling Stone Ron Wood, singer James Blunt, and a very smug and catty Simon Cowell). And then there is the weekly challenge, in which May, Hammond, and Clarkson are given some kind of daunting task. These range from finding "the best driving road in the world" (turns out it’s in Italy) to concocting an amphibious car capable of crossing the English Channel; there’s also a race across London by auto, bicycle, boat, and public transportation, a drag race between the Aston-Martin and a roller skater with a rocket pack, and a two-mile sprint matching the extraordinary Bugatti Veyron against one of the Royal Air Force’s state-of-the-art Typhoon jet fighters. How do you launch a second season of a series when you concluded the previous one by murdering the title characters in cold blood? As is often the case on The Venture Bros., Adult Swim's hilariously funny poke at '60s adventure cartoons like Johnny Quest, the answer comes down to: weird science. It would be a crime to reveal how Hank and Dean Venture's beleaguered dad, Doc Venture (voiced by James Urbaniak) brings his hapless offspring back from the grave, but suffice it to say that the boys are back by the end of Episode One ("Powerless in the Face of Death") and making life miserable for their dad and bodyguard Brock Sampson (Patrick Warburton) shortly thereafter. But Team Venture's exploits share the spotlight this season with the misery of their main antagonist, the Monarch, who struggles to reclaim his lady love, Dr. Girlfriend (voiced by series co-creator Doc Hammer) from the suave Phantom Limb (also Urbaniak). Over the course of the sophomore season's thirteen episodes, the Monarch endures countless humiliations in the name of love (not the least of which is a disastrous double date with Dr. G and Limb in "Victor. Echo. November), while the Venture boys encounter countless historical figures (not the least of which is a thinly disguised Scooby-Doo and friends), screw up their own dates, and generally make a mess of things in their own cheerful but ridiculous ways. Meanwhile, the Ventures' neighbor, the overwrought Dr. Orpheus (Steven Ratazzi), also gets his own story arc, in which he re-assembles his "team" of vampire hunter Jackson Twilight and sexually ambiguous monk The Alchemist (voiced by Dana Snyder of Aqua Teen Hunger Force), with disastrous results. Exceptionally sharp writing that's rich with pop culture references and excellent voice performances make this series one of the smartest and funniest in Adult Swim's anarchic stable; here's hoping the network doesn't allow another two years to pass before they greenlight a third season.

The two-disc set offers raucous commentary by Hammer and co-creator Jackson Publick on all 13 episodes (Urbaniak and Michael Sinterniklaas, who voices Dean Venture, join them for several commentaries), as well as a barrage of deleted scenes from each story, and an amusing mock behind-the-scenes look at Astro-Base Go, the orbiting moon station where Hammer and Publick create the series with the help of SoulBot, a big-hearted robot which also lends its bloops and bleeps to the Ventures' mechanical assistant, H.E.L.P.E.R. Just because you're all grown up doesn't mean your family dynamics get any easier. Luckily for TV fans, the first season of Brothers and Sisters makes for addictive watching while exploring the intricacies of a family, in crisis and in repose. First, let us give thanks for the amazing Sally Field, who has literally grown up on the small screen, and who now plays the matriarch of the Walker family, though not as a power-mad dowager, but as a well-meaning, slightly naive but fiercely loyal California girl gone ever-so-slightly gray. In fact, when this show debuted in the fall of 2006, it was known as the "new Calista Flockhart show," but Field quickly became the standout in a stellar ensemble cast.

While the Walkers' problems of money and business deals may seem rarefied to some, the family pecking orders and feuds are universal and handled deftly by the writers and the actors, including Patricia Wettig, the icy former mistress of the dearly departed Walker pere (Tom Skerritt), and brothers Dave Annable and Balthazar Getty. Premiering just six months after the release of the game that inspired it, the animated series The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 integrated elements from the game into a serial-style cartoon that pitted heroic plumbers Mario and Luigi against the reptilian King Koopa and a squad of new villains. Longtime fans should know that several original songs have been removed from the episodes and replaced by generic background music; also missing is the infamous guest appearance by Milli Vanilli in "Kootie Pie Rocks," though this was pulled during the show's syndicated run. The adherence to vampire mythology can also be a little lax, since this variant eats and drinks just like the living, which makes their blood lust seem more like caffeine addiction. Further, with so many pivotal relationships carrying over from the first season, the second can feel a little anticlimactic, even with charismatic new vampires, such as Rose (Lauren Cohan) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies), though the bond that develops between Bonnie and Jeremy helps to counteract the more gruesome bits of business. And don't get too attached to the principal cast, because one of them won't make it out alive. There is no denying that animated superhero shows have come a long way since Super Friends. The Challenge of the Super Friends is very '70s in presentation, riddled with inconsistencies and drawing mistakes, and allowing heroes to fly even if they couldn't fly in the comics. However, there is no denying the staying power of the stories, its concept, the superheroes/villains pairing and its overall charm. Included in this set are a couple of nice features, particularly the superheroes/villains biographies, each with their own mini-video. There is also a good, brief documentary of today's comic book and TV show creators reflecting on their impressions of Challenge of the Super Friends and its influence on their careers. And there are heartbreaks and great, deep romantic connections. Sarah (Rachel Griffiths) finally gets a major story arc of her own in this season, and it's lovely. Her bond is only growing with the handsome Luc (Gilles Marini), and they make a decision on how to face the rest of their lives. Kitty and Seth have a different kind of decision to make, and Beau Bridges, excellent as Brody, a onetime flame of Nora's, reappears in her, and the family's, life at exactly the wrong time. Which of course means the perfect time for wonderful, engaging TV drama. The fifth-season boxed set includes some great extras, like bloopers, behind-the-scenes details, and a hilarious interview with the undeniably gorgeous but extremely self-effacing Marini. Fans of Brothers and Sisters will want to make room at the table one last time for this loving, lush finale. --A.T. Hurley

The ninth season of Little House on the Prairie was re-invented as Little House: A New Beginning after star Michael Landon decided to leave the series. (He continued to produce, direct and write for the show.) The first episode began with the departure of Landon's Pa Ingalls, who fell on hard economic times and moved his family to the city . He returned for just one harrowing two-parter, "Home Again," in which son Albert (Matthew Laborteaux) battled a morphine addiction. In Landon's absence, it was up to the other denizens of Walnut Grove to provide drama, and provide they did. The meddling, gossipy Harriet Oleson (Katherine MacGregor) played town villain, followed by her whiny adopted daughter Nancy (Allison Balson), who was annoying but never as deliciously wicked as her predecessor Nellie (Alison Arngrim, who makes a welcome guest appearance). Laura (Melissa Gilbert) is all grown up and living with husband Almanzo (Dean Butler) and their daughter Rose. The show also cast a pre-scandal Shannen Doherty as Jenny Wilder to fill the spunky young protagonist role vacated by Gilbert.

Little House continued its run of darker stories in this season, from a crazed father (Robert Loggia) who shoots his daughter and wife to a suicide attempt by Jenny after her father dies, filling in other episodes with fluffy schmaltz featuring some of the other townsfolk (you know they're desperate when an entire show is about a wayward orangutan). The series also liked to feature outcasts teaching the town lessons in tolerance: in one case a circus midget can't get a job because of his looks, and a "wild boy" turns out just to be an abused mute. Despite its attempts to fill the void left by Pa and Ma Ingalls with new characters, however, the long-running series lost its spark without Landon and did not last after the ninth season.

The boxed set includes an 86-page booklet: Little House on the Prairie A-Z by historian Patrick Loubatiere, who also interviews Dean Butler and Alison Arngrim in the DVD bonus features. The interviews don't reveal much, other than Loubatiere's smugness for knowing more about Little House than the stars of the show. --Ellen A. Kim

The superb sitcom The Big Bang Theory launches into its fourth season with an expanded cast and a whole new set of social dynamics to go with it. It's a little unsteady at first: Sheldon (the ever-inspired Jim Parsons) denies having a girlfriend in the similarly intellectual Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik, a long way away from Blossom), which leads to several Sheldon-dominated episodes--and as marvelous a character as Sheldon is, he can be too much of a good thing. Fortunately, things soon take a clever turn: Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Howard's girlfriend Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), and Amy become, ever so awkwardly, friends, providing an ingenious counterpoint to the socially hapless quartet of Sheldon, Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Howard (Simon Helberg), and Raj (Kunal Nayyar). Amy's emotional disconnection but fervent curiosity provides a delicious variation on Sheldon (without in any way replacing him) that gooses the show up to a new level. But episodes without her are still enjoyable--this is one of the best-written and -acted comedies on television. Though there is an odd increase in bodily function humor (perhaps the writers are trying to counter the jokes about comic books and theoretical physics), inventive stories abound: Sheldon becoming obsessed with cats; Amy's complete bafflement at becoming aroused by one of Penny's ex-boyfriends; grappling with Wil Wheaton over 21 extra seconds of Raiders of the Lost Ark; the plundering of Sheldon's World of Warcraft account; Leonard getting involved with Raj's sister Priya (Aarti Mann), much to Raj's discomfort; and much, much more. The balance of the ensemble grows increasingly skillful over the episode, giving everyone a chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer

Mind you aren't standing next to an anomaly when one opens up; there might just be a Gigantosaurus sprinting out of it. The dedicated team of scientists in Primeval have long since learned this, of course, and it's their business to find the anomalies (glittery portals through time) and contain and study the dinosaurs. Volume Two of Primeval is actually season three of the British TV series, ten episodes jam-packed with ancient predators, time travel, and violent change within the team that goes well beyond new hairstyles (anybody in the cast is expendable, as we learn early in the season). Team leader Nick Cutter (Douglas Henshall) is dealing with new crew members as well as the genocidal vision of his estranged wife Helen (splendid Juliet Aubrey), who has literally seen the future and decided the planet would be better off without humans on it. Flirtation grows between Connor (Andrew-Lee Potts) and Abby (Hannah Spearritt), the youngest and cutest members of the squad, and a cranky cop (Jason Flemyng) joins the team in a most dramatic way. The special effects are top-notch, and often imaginatively deployed (there's something about seeing a dinosaur clomping down an airport runway that hits you where you live), and the actors are a cut above what you might expect in a genre series. While not a kiddie show per se, Primeval is pitched in a child-friendly register, even if it has its share of scary, roaring beasts. The major cast changes result in the dropping of fruitful plotlines from the uber-story, and there's not enough Helen on view in season three, although the episodic stories are still fun. For the DVD, the ten episodes are supplemented by a helpful 20-minute interview with Douglas Henshall (with clips to help catch the uninitiated up with the first two seasons), and a featurette on the "Genesis of a Creature." Alas, the series was officially canceled by ITV in 2009, leaving its characters stuck in a rather hefty cliffhanger at the end of season three. Stay tuned for future evolution. --Robert Horton

Even Reeves' Clark Kent is cool, even cocky without any of the trademarked shy, clumsy and hickish traits the character has developed over the years. And then there's Phyllis Coates as the Lois Lane. Coates portrayal of Lois is surprisingly one of the stronger female roles in '50s television. She is one tough cookie able to stand her ground against criminals, fight off bad guys and is not afraid to outwardly express herself. Sadly, Phyllis Coates would be replaced by Noel Neill in subsequent seasons.

Adventures of Superman also stands the test of time well as one of the best shows from the early days of television. A lot of it has to do with how the writers, producers and actors approached the making of the show. This first season, as well as the second, were made as if they were making a serious show suitable for kids and adults. Instead of being a kids' comic book show, the episodes have a strong "mini-serial-crime-movie" feel, are very story driven and include loads of elements from the popular film noir style of the 1950s. This is evident in such classic episodes such as the season opener "Superman on Earth," "The Stolen Costume" where Superman has his costume stolen by a burglar, and the tense horror-noir "The Haunted Lighthouse." Also included on this DVD set is the 1951 theatrical release Superman and The Mole Men which later became the televised two-part episode "The Unknown People." --Rob Bracco

As the season unfolds, he will be forced to make more ethically challenged deals with the powers behind the scenes, one of whom has a mysterious connection with his mother. Brotherhood mines the clash between personal and professional lives to flesh out its characters. "The people's business" doesn't pay well, and Tommy is forced to moonlight as a real estate developer, and perform all home repairs. Eileen (Annabeth Gish), his picture-perfect politician's wife, smokes pot and is having an affair with a man she knew in high school. Declan Gigg (Ethan Embry) is a conflicted policeman who grew up with the Caffees. This Sci-Fi Channel reality show is by far the best prank television series that has ever aired. Not only does Scare Tactics show how far prank shows have come since Candid Camera, but its focus on bizarre and horrific trickery is truly convincing. While one at first may pity its victims, any cruelty is erased by the way Scare Tactics tactfully handles its subject matter. Each prank begins with an interview clip profiling a friend who wishes to pursue the prank, explaining why the victim deserves what is coming, and when the prank is exposed the friend rushes forward in alliance. When one sees victims screaming, cursing, and cringing, there is no doubt about their sincerity, but we know it is in good fun. Additionally, the pranks are taken to extremes so that victims feel the sting of fear before relief.

Episodes open with host Tracy Morgan (30 Rock, SNL) setting the scene for three segments. Enjoying the DVD with no commercials enhances this format greatly. Though the episodes run into one another and become one startling blur, story patterns emerge, and with this repetition, one can witness the victims' reactions in all their abject, uncut glory. The pranks start with those that prey on teenage fears--of babysitting while a psychotic man sneaks into the house, for example, or of being forced to drink Kool-Aid among creepy cult members. From there, the pranks become more adult. Working men witness people being shoved into woodchippers or are accosted by escaped mental patients while on border patrol. Many episodes are devoted to alien or psychic occurrences in laboratories. Some are gorier, focusing on hit-and-run accidents or murderous, top-secret government officials. Scare Tactics taps a variety of fears, and that is what makes it great. One experiences victims' reluctance, hesitation, and reticence before launching into extreme adrenaline reactions. Part of the show's humor lies in how willing victims are to accept their intolerable positions. How much will we put up with before drawing the line? Season one of Prison Break is great television. Here's the set-up. Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) is framed and wrongfully convicted for assassinating the Vice President's brother. Lincoln's brother Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), who just happens to have designed Illinois' Fox River Penitentiary where Lincoln is on death row, hatches an elaborate escape plan. Michael's plan involves getting himself incarcerated in Fox River and smuggling the prison's blueprints by having them hidden in tattoos that cover his entire torso. Once inside, Michael must form alliances with a rogue's gallery of felons with their own sometimes unsavory motives. Meanwhile, on the outside, Lincoln's lawyer and one-time girlfriend Veronica Donovan (Robin Tunney), pursued by Secret Service agents, attempts to unravel the conspiracy that sent her man to the slammer.

Prison Break is anchored by tight, suspenseful writing clearly relished by the largely little-known cast. Standouts include Robert Knepper as the murderer/pedophile T-Bag, who somehow makes such a despicable character likeable. Stacey Keach of Mike Hammer fame plays the warden-with-a-heart-of-gold, who clashes with Captain Brad Bellick (Wade Williams) over whether to rehabilitate the inmates or makes their lives more miserable. Peter Stormare, famous for his skills with a wood chipper in Fargo, turns in a deliciously menacing performance as mob boss John Abruzzi, while Amaury Nolasco's winsome Fernando Sucre shares a cell and secrets with Miller's Scofield. Watching the show one gets a sense that this is the opening salvo of Wentworth Miller's career, which will doubtless include roles as assassins, detectives, super heroes, and perhaps the champion of staring contests. Midway through the season it's explained that Scofield is a genius with an heightened sensitivity to other peoples' suffering, which sums up what makes the show so great--the mind-bendingly intricate plot is a framework for moments when people make others suffer and cope with the burden of their own suffering.

The six-disc set includes 22 addictive episodes, audio commentary on selected episodes, three featurettes, and alternate and deleted scenes. As with most TV shows on DVD, the "previously on Prison Break" intros can get tiresome, but that's what the fast forward button is for. --Ryan Boudinot

Hedonistic bachelor Charlie (Charlie Sheen) is a jingles writer who, he blithely states, makes a lot of money for doing very little work, sleeps with beautiful women who don't ask about his feelings, drives a Jag and lives at the beach, and sometimes, in the middle of the day, for no reason at all, likes to make himself a big pitcher of margaritas and take a nap out on the sundeck. His brother, Alan (Jon Cryer), evicted from his house by his soon-to-be-ex-wife, is "rigid, inflexible, uptight, obsessive and anal-retentive." Charlie and Alan are "twisted Jungian archetypes," according to series co-creator Chuck Lorre in one of this set's bonus features. If by "twisted Jungian archetypes," he means Oscar and Felix from The Odd Couple, then yes, Charlie and Alan are "twisted Jungian archetypes," and this inaugural season finds rich comic tension in their period of adjustment. Charlie is a Man Behaving Badly, whose idyllic life is upended when "fuddy-duddy" Alan moves in, accompanied by his impressionable 10-year-old son, Jake (Angus T. Jones), with whom he shares custody with his iceberg-cold, sexually confused (a comic conceit thankfully abandoned by season's end) estranged wife, Judith (Marin Hinkle). Alan is a single father who is appalled by his amoral brother's lifestyle and by the influence Charlie might have on Jake ("Uncle Charlie, I understand the point spread, but I'm still confused about the vig"). And then there's Berta (effortless scene-stealer Conchata Ferrell), Charlie's formidable, tart-tongued housekeeper who is initially driven out the door by Alan's fussiness ("The peanut butter stains on Jake's shirts really require an enzyme presoak").

Two and a Half Men is a guy show that sets feminism back a good three decades. Women are portrayed as either bimbonic objects of lust (Transformers' Megan Fox guest stars as Berta's teenage granddaughter), vengeful and retaliative (Heather Locklear as Alan's divorce lawyer), crazy hot (Jenna Elfman as an unstable single mother on the run), or emasculating (Holland Taylor as Charlie and Alan's mother, or, as Charlie refers to her, "Mom, the Impaler"). The charming Melanie Lynskey's is a particularly thankless role, that of Rose, Charlie's "insightful and disturbing" stalker, who becomes Jake's babysitter. While Charlie's "bad-boy act" could quickly get old in lesser hands, Sheen, in the past not the most natural of comic actors, is in his element. Charlie's genuine affection for Jake goes a long way toward redeeming his character (and lack of it). Two and a Half Men, a People's Choice Award-winner its first season, really adds up with a crudely funny sense of humor that is all kinds of wrong, but also smart and, at times, even sweet. --Donald Liebenson

It looked like a standard teen soap on the outside, but once you scratched the surface of the glittery, sun-dappled Fox drama The O.C., you'd find underneath a number of surprisingly well-developed characters, fun plots that played around with their soap conventions, and some of the wittiest dialogue this side of an Aaron Sorkin show. The setup was pure high concept: hunky, brooding Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) was a good kid from Chino starting to go bad, and thanks to the interference of his lawyer, Sandy Cohen (Peter Gallagher), finds himself whisked away from the wrong side of the tracks to the mansions and manicured lawns of Orange County. Soon, Ryan finds himself living in the Cohens' pool house, involved with troubled rich girl Marissa (Mischa Barton), and bristling against the societal confines of his new home, as the people may be richer but they're just as screwed up as anyone else. Still, somehow, he manages to bring out the humanity of the superficial people around him, and they become all the better for knowing him.

Okay, enough with the Beverly Hills, 90210 scenario--what The O.C. turned out to be was the most addictive TV soap in recent memory, and one with a brain to boot. Smarter than Melrose Place, sexier than 90210, funnier than Felicity, and not as enamored of itself as Dawson's Creek, The O.C. reveled in clever and hilarious dialogue (the pilot episode earned a WGA nomination) and quirky, eccentric characters. Most noteworthy was breakout star Adam Brody, who as Ryan's geeky newfangled brother-type Seth practically stole the teen heartthrob mantle away from Russell Crowe-lookalike McKenzie. Barton was a bit of a blank as the troubled Marissa, but her best pal, the blissfully superficial Summer, was played by Rachel Bilson as the perfect supporting character in a dizzy farce. And the adults, especially Gallagher and Kelly Rowan as the supportive Cohens, grounded the other half of the show in you know, like, maturity. Not that The O.C. ever forgot the fun that was to be had in TV-land, as most every other episode ended with a fistfight or someone falling into a pool--sometimes both. The drama was poured on aplenty in the second season of The O.C., as the sun-dappled denizens of Orange County found their lives massively upended and then some. At the end of the first season, the Cohen household had been reduced to two--parents Sandy and Kirsten (Peter Gallagher and Kelly Rowan)--as the boys had flown the coop, moody Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) back to Chino and goofy Seth (Adam Brody) for the wide expanse of the Pacific (somehow ending up in Portland, Oregon). Once the prodigal sons returned home, thanks to a lot of persuading, both tried to mend relationships with their former girlfriends, Marissa (Mischa Barton) and Summer (Rachel Bilson). While friendships were solidified, everyone was dating someone else: Seth was with sultry club manager Alex (Olivia Wilde), Summer with sensitive polo jock Zach (Michael Cassidy), Ryan with smart girl Lindsay (Shannon Lucio), and Marissa with her family's pool guy and a bottle of vodka.

That's just the first half of this year of The O.C., and we haven't even gotten to the adults yet. Both Sandy and Kirsten found themselves tempted away by more-than-willing suitors, and wicked Julie (Melinda Clarke), Marissa's mom, cheated on new husband Caleb (Alan Dale) with ex-husband Jimmy (Tate Donovan). An extremely tangled web was woven, one from which the show almost didn't recover: the Lindsay storyline started out strong but went nowhere, Sandy's ex-girlfriend (Kim Delaney) was a bit of a bore, and the same-sex relationship between Marissa and Alex never really gelled. All seemed like sure-fire character additions, but it was the later peripheral characters, including Billy Campbell as a magazine editor smitten with Kirsten and the menacing yet sexy Logan Marshall-Green as Ryan's ex-con brother, who injected The O.C. with energy, and helped steer the show back on course. Brody, who became the show's de facto poster boy, got to show off his comedic talents with the wonderful Bilson (who rode the Zach-Seth-Summer romantic triangle most smoothly), and the heretofore sullen McKenzie got to lighten up quite a bit, until the show's violent yet effective season finale.

Forsaking a good amount of its comedy for drama, The O.C. got a little too seriously soapy, but its characters were so compelling you couldn't stop watching--even waiflike Marissa grew some edges. Clarke's scheming Julie was a constant pleasure to watch, and Rowan turned Kirsten's late-season downturn into a steely yet heartfelt portrayal. Despite the bumps, The O.C. remained one of the most exciting shows to look forward to week after week, a soap with smarts thanks to its fresh dialogue, gifted cast, and careening plot arcs. --Mark Englehart

By the finale, two of these people will be gone forever, but it wouldn't be The O.C. if there weren't some bright spots along the way. College-bound couple Seth (Adam Brody) and Summer (Rachel Bilson) are still full of quips, the Tracy Flick-like Taylor (Autumn Reeser), who plays a bigger role in the next season, is a welcome addition, and the soundtrack is jam-packed with material from the likes of MIA, Gang of Four, Sufjan Stevens, Lady Sovereign, and the Subways, who appear in "The Anger Management." It begins like an entry in the fast-paced Bourne series with a foot chase through London, followed by two execution-style hits. Moments later, MP Stephen Collins (David Morrissey) finds out his research assistant, Sonia, was killed in an accident. Newspaper editor Cameron Foster (Bill Nighy) and reporters Della (Kelly Macdonald) and Cal (John Simm), Stephen's former campaign manager, intend to establish whether the events are related. When they realize he's following identical leads for a competing paper, Foster drafts his son, Dan (James McAvoy), to join their investigation. Before long, the team discovers Stephen was having an affair with Sonia. When the news becomes public, his wife, Ann (Polly Walker), leaves him. Then Della finds that the murder victim, a 15-year-old "bag snatcher" from the wrong side of the tracks, contacted Sonia the day she died. He swiped her briefcase, hoping for cash, but found incriminating photos instead--Sonia's death may not have been accidental. State of Play embodies British television at its finest. It's also a particularly pulse-pounding portrayal of the journalistic life, a small-screen successor to fact-based films like All the Presidents Men and Zodiac--but with a lot more tea and biscuits. Writer Paul Abbott (Touching Evil) and director David Yates (The Girl in the Café) provide low-key commentary for the first episode, while Yates, producer Hilary Bevan Jones, and editor Mark Day contribute to the sixth. Like 1989 miniseries Traffik, the basis for Steven Soderbergh's award-winning movie, State of Play would later be adapted for the big screen by The Last King of Scotland's Kevin Macdonald. --Kathleen C. Perennially one of the WB's highest-rated series, Gilmore Girls hit its creative high point to date with its stellar fifth season, which started out with young Rory (Alexis Bledel) feeling the fallout of doing something terribly non-Rory-like: sleeping with Dean (Jared Padalecki), her married ex-boyfriend. Rory's indulgence in adultery put, for the first time, a serious, sharp wedge in her relationship with her mother, Lorelai (Lauren Graham), who was both shocked by her daughter's behavior and worried Rory would repeat the mistakes Lorelai made at her age. But while Rory jetted off to Europe with her grandmother (Kelly Bishop) for the summer, Lorelai finally got her relationship with diner owner Luke (Scott Patterson) into a serious groove, starting with an official (and incredibly sweet) first date and others that involved, if you can believe it, a Swedish Pippi Longstocking movie. And as Lorelai navigated romantic terrain in Stars Hollow (terrain that of course did not run smooth), Rory found life more complex in her second year at Yale, as her relationship with Dean became increasingly strained. Not only that, she found her attention turned towards preppy Logan (Matt Czurchy), a spoiled rich kid who represented everything Rory couldn't stand--and was of course immediately attracted to. Little did Rory know that Logan's entrance into her life, and her interaction with his family, would be the catalyst for one of the most momentous decisions she would ever make.

With this season of Gilmore Girls, creative forces Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino finally found a way to make the Stars Hollow-Yale dichotomy work perfectly, as each location still stood alone but had decided repercussions on the other. Gone were freshman-year anxieties for Rory and in their place were more adult romantic concerns as well as a class consciousness that, for the first serious time, found Rory on the side of the haves and not the have-nots. While the Rory-Dean drama played itself out nicely and succinctly, it was the devilish Logan who lit a fire underneath this Gilmore girl; the episode "You Jump, I Jump, Jack" was a lovely twist on the '30s romantic comedies that found rich folk at play with words and deeds. Bledel started to fully blossom as Rory grew from ingénue to leading lady, and she was matched peerlessly by Graham, whose passion, anger, stubbornness, and ravishing beauty all came to a head in "Wedding Bell Blues," which featured her two greatest nemeses: her mother and Rory's dad, Christopher (David Sutcliffe). The show's trademark eccentricities were all in place--including a Pulp Fiction party and an elementary school production of Fiddler on the Roof, among other things--but it mined the best drama of its run with the season's last four episodes, which found Rory's confidence shaken to the core. To give any of the proceedings away would spoil the drama, but suffice it to say you will be glued to the TV for this season's final four hours; it's Gilmore Girls at its phenomenal best. --Mark Englehart

The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries - Season One Specifications
The Hardy Boys Mysteries and The Nancy Drew Mysteries began in 1977 as separate series alternating in the same time slot on ABC. Early the following year, the casts combined, and in the fall of 1978 the Nancy Drew thread was dropped and The Hardy Boys Mysteries continued on alone. This Season One boxed set captures the twin-series idea at its most ambitious, with adolescent brothers Frank and Joe Hardy, created by author Franklin W. Dixon, sleuthing for clues one week and Carolyn Keene's Nancy Drew investigating crimes the next.

Actually, as fans of the books know, Dixon and Keene were both pen names used by Edward Stratemeyer when he created those characters in 1927. Just as the young detectives have been updated in print every so often to accommodate successive generations of readers, so too did the TV show present Joe (Shaun Cassidy, brother of David Cassidy of The Partridge Family), Frank (Parker Stevenson), and Nancy (Pamela Sue Martin) as thoroughly 1970s kids. The boys are outfitted with motorcycles, Joe enjoys a retro-pop singing career, and Nancy has a certain freedom of movement only the hippest of dads in a permissive age would allow. Hardy Boys finds the always-amicable siblings following in the footsteps of their father, Fenton (Edmund Gilbert), a private detective, as they untangle capers that take them from haunted houses to Hawaii. The Hardy episodes make for brisk, family viewing, much better than the bubblegum reputation that built up, undeservedly, around the series. Slightly less interesting are the Nancy Drew programs (despite a more entertaining supporting cast), but only because the heroine is less focused and distractingly man-crazy, and the storylines are less exotic. An emphasis on the supernatural and science-fiction themes lends a Scooby-Doo vibe to several programs in both series, though the best stories are the ones with straightforward, meat-and-potatoes detective work. Among the directors on either series are Jack Arnold (The Creature from the Black Lagoon), Winrich Kolbe (Star Trek: The Next Generation), and actors Vince Edwards and Stuart Margolin. --Tom Keogh

Pokemon: Battle Frontier Vol. 1 Box Set Specifications
The 50-episode Battle Frontier adventure comes between the Pokémon Advanced Battle story and the Diamond and Pearl Saga. Ash, May, Max, and Brock roam through forests, towns, and islands, making friends with humans and new Pokémon. Although Max does little but read out the data from the Pokédex, May and Brock have larger roles than usual. May competes in Pokémon Contests, a combination battle and performance that suggests rhythmic gymnastics with an edge. Unlike Ash, she doesn't always win. Brock reveals an unexpected paternal streak when he adopts a baby Bonsly that needs constant bottle feeding and cuddling. Ash and Pikachu remain the focus of the stories, and they win several Frontier "symbols" (rather than badges). Some of the material has obviously been re-edited as Ash wins his second symbol in Episode #4, but the episode in which he won the first one isn't included. Episode #15 features an obnoxious, effete gay male stereotype who's out of keeping with the normally innocuous tone of Pokémon. The new voice cast takes some getting used to, as Sara Natachame lacks Veronica Taylor's familiar rasp as Ash. Battle Frontier is an unusually lavish Pokémon set, with lots of CG special effects (bubbles, fire, rainbows, etc.) and strange machines for Team Rocket to pilot. But it's one of the less endearing entries in this long-running franchise. (Rated A, suitable for All Ages: minor cartoon violence.) --Charles Solomon

Will & Grace debuted with a controversial splash because one of its two lead characters is gay--but smart writing and topnotch performances, not politics, have made the show a hit. As a result, it's Jack and Karen who get free reign to be truly obnoxious and ridiculous--which, of course, makes them incredibly funny and charismatic. Hayes and Mullally rise to the occasion, ripping through absurd situations and arias of narcissistic wit with dazzling panache.

Will & Grace's plots routinely center around scenarios that could feature a married couple or two same-sex roommates: Will and Grace bicker over buying a dog, find their relationship tested by apartment renovations, or discover they're both pursuing the same guy--standard sitcom material that the gay factor gives a clever spin. Though their relationship gets in the way of their sex lives, the two take so much pleasure in each other's company that they can't help but stick together--a surprisingly chaste theme for such a culturally groundbreaking show, but one that Will & Grace's addicted audience undoubtedly appreciates. --Bret Fetzer

Did Thundercats producers Rankin/Bass ever consider that their '80s animated adventure series would become such a pop-culture touchstone decades later, with hip-hop artists dropping references to the show in the songs and comedians using Lion-O as a punchline? The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion! (1997) revels in all the basic pleasures of this classic good ol' boy TV series: fast cars, bar fights, police cars colliding in midair, and pretty girls who bend over a lot in cutoff shorts. Almost the whole cast reunites--Bo Duke (John Schneider) has become a racecar pilot; Luke Duke (Tom Wopat) has become a smoke jumper; and Daisy Duke (Catherine Bach) has become a motorcycle-riding PhD in ecology. Along for the ride are Cooter (Ben Jones), who's become a congressman, Enos (Sonny Shroyer), who's become an L.A. police detective, and Uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle), who's just the same ornery old coot he ever was. A wily con woman named Mama Jo Max (Stella Stevens, star of the original Nutty Professor and the original Poseidon Adventure) has teamed up with Sheriff Rosco (James Best) to turn the beloved local swamp into a theme park, and the Duke boys agree to drive the General Lee (the show's trademark red Dodge Charger, which was more popular than the human stars) in a race to protect the endangered land. Naturally, there are double-crosses on top of double-crosses and all the down-home high jinks you could ask for. Written by the creator of the original show, Reunion! doesn't have a lot of surprises, but who watches The Dukes of Hazzard for surprises? This is comfort television, pure and simple, and fans of the show will take plenty of comfort. However, the less said about Hazzard in Hollywood (2000), the better. This hodgepodge of contrived plotting, clumsy dialogue, and inane supporting characters hoped to revive the franchise with a new recurring villain to replace the late, lamented Boss Hogg (Sorrell Booke), but the results are dismal--which only highlights how successfully Reunion! captures the flavor of the original show. --Bret Fetzer

"Lost meets The X-Files" is a not inappropriate description of Fox TV's Fringe, especially considering that cocreator J.J. Abrams was also one of the Lost masterminds. But this ambitious and often exciting series (with all 22 episodes from its second season, plus plenty of bonus material, released here on six discs) merits more than that glib label. As before, the members of the Fringe Division, an obscure wing of the FBI barely recognized (and this season threatened with elimination) by the government at large, are the "cleanup crew" summoned when the universe is on the verge of shredding at the seams. Led by Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv), brilliant but mad scientist Walter Bishop (with John Noble as the show's most appealing character), and Bishop's son Peter (Joshua Jackson), they investigate crimes and occurrences involving the seemingly inexplicable, ranging from garden-variety phenomena like ESP, mind control, and hypnosis to really strange stuff like "clairaudience" (receiving messages or thoughts from another realm), cryonics (as in frozen, disembodied heads), and the existence of a parallel universe. Once again there's also a healthy dose of scary monsters, including a hideous mutant who drags its victims underground before devouring them, a community of deformed victims of scientific tests gone awry, two-foot-long parasites with human hosts, and a walking shadow that renders whoever it passes through into dust and ash. But it all gets more personal for our three heroes this time around, as they realize that Walter's long-ago research and experiments had serious consequences not only for him (he spent 17 years locked up in a rubber room) but especially for Olivia and Peter, who must deal with shocking revelations about their childhoods.

If Fringe has a weakness, it's that its reach sometimes exceeds its grasp. There are so many ideas here that overarching themes like "the Pattern" (a series of terrifying, synchronous events throughout the world) disappear for episodes at a time; the notion of "the other side," a parallel universe where things are largely similar but different in very peculiar details (JFK lived to be an old man, while the Department of Defense is housed beneath the Statue of Liberty), is introduced in the first episode but then rarely mentioned until the second half of the season, which culminates with the Fringe team traveling to the other side and confronting their alternate selves (fortunately, the final two episodes help tie up various loose ends from this season and set the stage for the next one). But a surfeit of good ideas is a lot better than a shortage of them, and the series is rarely less than interesting even when it loses its focus, and the direction, sets, special effects, and other technical elements are consistently excellent. As was the case the first time out, bonus material is generous and varied. It includes a newly "unearthed episode," audio commentary, deleted scenes, features like "The Mythology of Fringe" and "Analyzing the Scene" (brief explications of key scenes in six episodes), and more. --Sam Graham

Based on the evidence in this six-disc set, this loving homage to the classic murder mystery created by Richard Levinson and William Link was, like their Columbo and Murder, She Wrote, nonviolent and intelligent television of the first order. Set in the 1940s, Ellery Queen stars boyishly charming Jim Hutton, one of the screen's most likable leading men, as the famed mystery writer and sleuth who helps his father, Inspector Richard Queen (David Wayne), solve the most baffling of cases. The pleasures this series affords are anything but guilty. Each intriguing episode begins with the preview of a murder, a roundup of the suspects (Was it the jealous wife? The dictatorial director?), and an irresistible challenge to viewers to "match wits with Ellery Queen and see if you can guess whodunit." Before revealing the killer, Ellery breaks the fourth wall to ask if we amateur sleuths at home have the mystery figured out, offering last-minute clues such as, "Once you figure out how, you'll know who." As with Burke's Law, each episode of Ellery Queen is packed with enough Hollywood legends, venerable character actors, and TV faves to fill The Love Boat. "The Adventure of Veronica's Veils" features George Burns as the victim ("I didn't die of natural causes," he announces via a filmed presentation following his demise), William Demarest, Don Porter, comedian Jack Carter, Hayden Rorke (Dr. Bellows on I Dream of Jeannie), and John Hillerman in his recurring role as radio detective Simon Brimmer, forever trying to one-up Queen. Queen himself makes it a point "to be observant and pay attention to details," particularly for that "dying clue which makes absolutely no sense." You'd be advised to do the same. The intricately plotted stories turn on the most arcane of clues and circumstances, as in the pilot episode "Too Many Suspects," in which solving a fashion designer's murder hinges on the reenactment of a TV news broadcast (maybe that explains the one-season run). This is not erudite humor, but some viewers will find it hits the spot.
