Buso Renkin Box Set 1 Specifications
In what he initially believes is a dream, Kazuki, the hero of the fantasy Buso Renkin (2006), sees a girl being attacked by a cobra-like monster. When he tries to rescue her, he's killed by the monster, but the girl brings him back to life with a kakugane, an alchemical device that replaces his heart. Tokiko is an alchemical warrior who fights homunculi, monstrous creatures that live on human flesh. Kazuki resolves to join her and begins learning how to fight them. Buso Renkin offers some impressive battle scenes. Tokiko fights with a "Valkyrie Skirt," mechanical arms and scythe-like blades that clip onto her thighs; Kazuki uses an elaborate spear with a magical banner. Buso Renkin is based on a manga by Nobuhiro Watsuki, the creator Rurouni Kenshin, but viewers expecting equally engaging characters and compelling plots are in for a disappointment. Kazuki accepts the existence of magical monsters and warriors without question, and decides to become an Alchemical Warrior on the spur of the moment. He lacks Kenshin's emotional complexity or evenIchigo's skepticismabout the supernatural--and the plot owes a lot to Bleach. The filmmakers don't tell the rather standard story very well: In the first episodes, Kazuki has to prevent a homunculus embryo from reaching Tokiko's brain and turning her into a monster. After he finds the antidote, he collapses--and wakes up to find everything's been happily resolved. (Rated T+ Older Teen: violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, nudity, risqué humor) --Charles Solomon
